THE TOKEN SYSTEM
We try to link our food service with a healthy and positive activity that will assist members of the homeless community to build their self esteem. Tokens can also be purchased directly from us by the public in order to reduce aggressive begging on the streets.
We partner with three NGOs in the area:
1. The Carpenter’s Shop in Roeland Street, which offers ablution facilities to the street people community. Anyone who makes use of this facility will receive a token, which can be exchanged for a meal.
2. Khulisa Social Solutions has set up an intervention program whereby anyone who participates in the Streetscapes project will receive a blue token.
3. TB/HIV Care offers HIV testing, monitoring and support groups at our premises in Canterbury Street, and the counsellors hand out orange tokens to their clients.
